H1N1 Bulletin

H1N1 influenza will likely add not only an increase in seasonal morbidity and mortality, but a considerable boost in public anxiety and demand upon both ambulatory and inpatient services.  CAPG’s medical groups offer a spectrum of regionally adapted responses, and this “bulletin board” will help to share best practices and breaking news from public health, government, and other sources.

Wells Shoemaker MD, Medical Director, CAPG

CIGNA will cover administration costs of H1N1 vaccine for all members except self-funded members who opt out.  At least on Plan (BSC) has indicated that they consider admin costs to be group responsibility for the vaccine which is supplied at no cost by the federal government.  Other policy clarifications will be posted as they arrive.  For more information please click here9/17/09

BSC Policy on H1N1 Vaccine Administration for IPA/MGs

Blue Shield of California circulated this H1N1 bulletin 9/28/2009, indicating that costs of vaccine and administration materials are paid by the government, and consequently there is no direct cost to groups.  Because this is a preventive service, there is no co-pay to be charged to the patient, under BSC contractual agreements with both groups and purchasers.  The administrative fee paid (typically per shot) to providers is the responsibility of the group under current capitation.  Full text

Both the Governors office and the California Department of Public Health are interested in what CAPG member groups are doing to educate their patients about this year’s intensified need to receive a flu vaccination, the H1N1 in particular.  Can you take just a moment to click on the survey link below and check off all of the applicable measures that your medical group/IPA is taking to communicate to your patients the need to obtain both the seasonal and H1N1 vaccination?   Feel free to type in any other measures not listed.
